Grooming: Why Does It Take so Long?

Step 1 Pre-Bath Preparations (30-40 minutes)

Your dog is readied for the bath by removing any excess body hair, a process which varies by breed. The remaining hair is completely detangled with a gentle brushing followed by a fine toothed combing.  This allows a thorough cleansing in the bath as well as preventing shampoo from finding spots to hide during the final rinse.   The nails are clipped.  The ears are plucked of excess hair and cleaned.

Step 2 Bathe and Massage (20 to 30 minutes)

A bath consists of a thorough and luxurious shampooing with the appropriate type of shampoo and complete rinse including a vigorous massage.  Flea treatment is used as necessary and other preparations are used at the request of owner/parent.  At this stage the anal glands are also expressed.

Step 3 Dry and Brush (20 to 45 minutes)

After the bath, your dog is fluff dried so the hair is tangle free.  Keeping your pet well brushed between grooming makes for an enjoyable visit.  Our groomer would be happy to give you some tips on caring for your dogs coat in between visits to Bark Place.

Step 4 Style (30 to 60 minutes)

Now that the time consuming steps are complete, we can relax and enjoy the finishing up process.  A good amount of the pattern (body) work is done with the clippers, and the legs, head and tail are hand scissored. (the whole coat can also be scissored)

Special concentration and a peaceful environment are essential in this final step, as a sudden movement by a dog can drastically change your desired style.  (This is the reason we contact owners/parents when a dog is complete and not set a finishing time…nothing is more distracting to a dog then their human parents.)

While a dog is on the table, any kind of distraction such as arrivals, phone calls, or unexpected commotion, can cause the dogs to lose attention and become excited.  Consequently, we have to stop, calm the dog and get him or her quiet enough to resume grooming.  (This is the reason we contact owners/parents when a dog is complete and do not provide a set finishing time…nothing is more distracting to a dog then their human parents.)

Timeframes depend on the size , style of the clip and amount of cooperation of the dog.

Good cooperation and communication is key in the grooming of your dog

  1. Please call if you are unable to keep your appointment.
  2. It is important to arrive at the specified time to ensure the process is not rushed or interrupted.  An estimated pick up time will be provided to you.  However,  as we proceed through the grooming process we will contact you to let you know when your pet will be finished.
  3. Please walk your dog prior to arriving for the appointment.
  4. Please avoid feeding your dog prior to the appointment.
